Helene could be Category 4 before landfall, Broward schools to close Thursday

The storm strengthened into a hurricane on Wednesday on a likely path toward Florida

Helene stayed a Category 1 hurricane, according to the advisory at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from the National Hurricane Center. It’s expected to bring catastrophic winds and storm surges to the northeastern Gulf Coast.

What to Know

Helene strengthened into a hurricane on Wednesday as it moved through the Gulf of Mexico on a path toward Florida.

All of South Florida, including Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach counties, was placed under a tropical storm warning earlier in the day.

Helene could become a major Category 4 hurricane on Thursday before reaching Florida's Gulf Coast.
