Potential Tropical Cyclone 19 formed Wednesday over the western Caribbean Sea and is expected to become a tropical storm in the next few days, forecasters said.

Forecast models are consistent, showing the system moving into the Gulf of Mexico by early next week, but a larger spread of possible solutions exists after that.

Hurricane Rafael picked up in intensity and became a Category 3 storm before making landfall in Cuba Wednesday, forecasters said.

Hurricane Milton churned Wednesday toward a potentially catastrophic collision along the west coast of Florida, where some residents insisted they would stay after millions were ordered to evacuate and officials warned that stragglers would face grim odds of surviving.

Hurricane Milton regained Category 5 strength with winds back up to 165 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. Tuesday update.

Milton was moving north-northeast at 9 mph about 480 miles southwest of Tampa, according to the NHC.
