The All-Star festivities officially began Monday with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. defeating Julio Rodriguez to win the Home Run Derby, following in the footsteps of his Hall of Fame father. Although Rodriguez didn't take home the trophy, the Mariners centerfielder didn't disappoint his home crowd in Seattle, setting a derby single-round record with 41 home runs.

Now it's time for the main event as marquee names like Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuna Jr., the leading vote-getters in each league, take the field. New York Yankees ace Cole Hamels will start the game for for the AL and Arizona Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen will get the ball for the NL.

What is the Midsummer Classic?

That's just a fancy nickname for the MLB All-Star Game, which (of course) is played in the middle of summer.

This will be the 93rd iteration of the Midsummer Classic, with the American League having gone 47-43-2 against the National League since the All-Star Game's inception in 1933. The All-Star Game ended in a 1-1 tie in 1961 in San Francisco due to rain and a 7-7 tie in 2002 in Milwaukee when the game went 11 innings and the teams ran out of available pitchers.

Between 1959 and 1962, MLB had two All-Star Games each season.

Does every MLB team get an All-Star?

Yes, all 30 MLB teams must be represented at the All-Star Game.

The nine starting position players, including the designated hitter, are selected by fan voting. During the first phase of voting, the top vote-getter in each league earns a starting spot. In Phase 2, fans vote between two finalists at each position to determine the starters.

That leaves 23 roster spots to be filled for a total of 20 position players and 12 pitchers on both the AL and NL squads. Those All-Star selections are determined by the player ballot and the commissioner's office. According to MLB.com, the players' ballots account for 17 players in each league, including five starting pitchers, three relievers and one backup for each position.

The commissioner's office then selects six additional players in each league -- four pitchers and two position players, with MLB ensuring each club has at least one All-Star. An injured All-Star, however, does not have to be replaced by a teammate, per MLB.com.

Does the All-Star Game determine home-field advantage?

Not anymore.

The result of the All-Star Game determined home-field advantage for the World Series from 2003 to 2016, with the winner of the American League and National League awarded four home games in the best-of-seven series. The AL won the first seven of those home-field-deciding All-Star matchups, the NL won the next three and the AL won the final four.

Since 2017, home field has been given to the World Series representative with the best regular-season winning percentage.
