The gunfire erupted just after 11 a.m. at a fundraiser for a well-known community member with cancer.

Mozee and the child were both rushed to hospitals. Mozee was pronounced dead. The child has injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.

Police did not say whether Mozee and the child are related.

No information on a suspect or possible motived was immediately released.

“We expect to apprehend a suspect in pretty short order,” Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said.

She offered her condolences to the family of the man who died, calling it a “really sad and tragic day for our community,” especially on Father’s Day weekend.

Event organizers said in a statement: “No matter what we do, no matter the reason why we come out, even with kids, the knuckleheads always come out to cause trouble. I don’t know what else we can do other than to have armed police officers at these type of events.”

News4 asked at a press conference if there was a police officer at the event. There was a security guard but not an officer because the event wasn't school-sponsored.
