The second phase of the drilling the tunnel at PortMiami is expected to begin in October.
The tunnel, which is part of the $1 billion project, will house a highway connecting the port and the MacArthur Causeway.
On July 31, the eastbound tube was finished, according to The Miami Herald. It connects the causeway median to the port. Meanwhile, on Oct. 19 the westbound tube construction is set to begin.
Crews have been dismantling parts of the boring machine from the completed tunnel and putting them in the westbound tunnel to start the digging, which will take six months.
“We are on time, we’re on schedule and we’re on budget,” the newspaper quoted Chris Hodgkins as saying. He is vice president of the consortium constructing the project, Miami Access Tunnel.
The project is set to be completed in 2014, and it is expected to include improvements the roads leading to the port and widen the causeway bridge.
