A 21-year-old woman was killed after a car traveling in the wrong direction on the Sawgrass Expressway struck a car she was in early Sunday morning, according to officials.
Marisa Caran Catronio, from Coral Springs, was pronounced dead on the scene following the collision, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
"I'll never hug my little girl again," said her grieving father, Gary.
Authorities said a 2004 Hyundai Sonata being driven by 20-year-old Kayla Maria Mendoza was going the wrong way eastbound on the Sawgrass Expressway westbound lanes when it struck a 2012 Toyota Camry head-on at about 1:45 a.m west of University Drive.
The driver of the Toyota, 21-year-old Kaitlyn Nicole Ferrante, was taken to Broward Health North in critical condition. Mendoza was also taken to Broward Health North with serious injuries.
Authorities are looking into the cause of the crash.
"My little girl is not here anymore because of the negligence of a driver driving on the wrong side of the highway," Gary Catronio said. "This has to be stopped. We've got to do something to prevent this. There should have been spike strips or something on these ramps to prevent this car from getting on the freeway."
