Gov. Ron DeSantis and other Florida officials spoke at the dedication of the Florida Holocaust Memorial in Tallahassee.
Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Executive Director Dave Kerner, who is Jewish, was among those who spoke about the memorial.

WATCH HERE"'Never again' is ultimately a way of life for the Jewish people," he said. "It is not the memorial itself that honors the survivors of the Holocaust, but rather the emotion that the memorial evokes when we are in its presence. We honor our beloved and cherished survivors by remembering the past. We remember the past so we can secure our future, and in doing so, we give life to the intent of 'never again.'"
DeSantis also dedicated a Governor's Medal of Freedom to David Shaecter, a Holocaust survivor who settled in Miami in 1956. He has called the city home for almost 70 years, DeSantis said, "and has made a profound impact on our South Florida community."

"I'm honored today to award David the Governor's Medal of Freedom, for his decades of work sharing his experience with Floridians and dedicating his life to ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust are taught to future generations," the governor said.
NBC6 spoke to Shaecter in 2023, when his story was preserved in a hologram exhibit at the Holocaust Museum in Boston.
