The shooting happened around 10 a.m. Monday in the area of Northwest 154th Street and Northwest 20th Avenue.

According to arrest reports, Miami-Dade officers were in the area conducting surveillance on an unrelated shooting investigation when they saw four males with firearms in front of 1881 Northwest 154th Street.

As officers approached in their vehicles, the suspects began shooting in their direction.

A surveillance camera from a nearby home captured the noise from the barrage of bullets that were fired. Another video shows three people jumping a fence into someone's backyard shortly after the shooting.

One officer was struck and suffered an injury to his face but may have been spared a more serious injury thanks to his vest, officials said.

"He was wearing his vest and we do believe that the vest has caused him to be able to go home and be with his family," Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels said at a news conference Monday afternoon.

The officer was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center for treatment. Police confirmed Tuesday that he had been released from the hospital.

The shooting set off a massive search in the area where it happened. Police initially said they had detained five people.

Video from the police response showed a SWAT vehicle outside a house that was surrounded by officers. One officer was heard telling people to come outside over a loudspeaker.

Surveillance video shows the SWAT standoff at a Miami Gardens home after a police officer was grazed by a bullet Monday.

"This is the Miami-Dade Police Department. The entire house is surrounded, we want you to come out with your hands up, so that nobody else gets hurt. No one has been seriously injured so far, we don't want anyone to get hurt, come out with your hands up," the officer says in the video. "We're going to move on to the next stage where we start breaking your house apart, if you look down you can see what we're setting up for. We are not going away, someone's going to get hurt inside the house and we do not want that. Come out with your hands up and let's resolve this."

According to the arrest reports, the officer who was shot identified Fernandez as the man who shot him.

Fernandez later denied any involvement, while Humes admitted to shooting at the officers' vehicle, the reports said.

Officials didn't release the officer's identity but said he's 29 and has been with the department for seven years.

The shooting happened not far from Rainbow Park Elementary School, which wasn't in session because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

"I was thankful that the school was closed, that no kids were around, that’s my main thing, I’m sorry that the police officer got shot, I’m glad no kids, like I said, I’m glad the school was closed," said one neighbor.
