Prosecutors Rest Case in Sean Taylor Murder Trial

Trial resumes Monday for the alleged shooter in the 2007 killing of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor

Prosecutors rested their case Monday in the Miami trial of the alleged shooter in the 2007 killing of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor.

Eric Rivera, 23, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Taylor. His attorneys are expected to call Rivera family members and police officers to testify when they begin making their case Monday afternoon.

The state rested its case with testimony from Dr. Satish Chundru, the assistant Miami-Dade medical examiner who performed the autopsy on Taylor.

Chundru testified that Taylor was clinically dead upon arrival to the emergency room but was kept alive until the next day.

He also testified that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the lower extremities.

"After a few minutes of a lot of blood loss, your brain no longer gets oxygen and that's when your body starts shutting down," said Chundru, who is now a deputy medical examiner in Travis County, Texas.

Jurors were off Friday after watching the videotaped confession of Rivera. Prosecutors say Rivera's confession is solid proof of his guilt, but Rivera's attorney claims he was coerced by police into making false statements.

Rivera was among five people from the Fort Myers area that authorities say wanted to burglarize Taylor's home because they thought he kept large amounts of cash there. Taylor was home instead of playing a game with the Redskins that day because of an injury.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy said he expects closing arguments by Wednesday.

Rivera faces life in prison if convicted. Taylor was a Pro Bowl safety who also starred at the University of Miami.
