The child was taken to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert, police said.

A 3-year-old boy has died after he was rushed to the hospital after a shooting in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday afternoon.

Police and Fire Rescue responded to the shooting in the 900 block of Southwest 27th Avenue just after 4:30 p.m., where they found the injured child, Fort Lauderdale Police officials said.

The boy was taken to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert, but later died from his injuries, police said. His name hasn't been released.

Family members gathered at the hospital throughout the day Sunday, and at one point were heard screaming and crying.
