A Miami Beach police officer shot and killed a suspect in Liberty City Wednesday night, police said.
The shooting happened around 8 p.m. near Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest 75th Street.
Detectives from a robbery task force were patrolling the area just east of I-95 when they heard gunshots, and tried to close in on where the gunshots were coming from, police said.
The officers found and chased a stolen vehicle, and the man inside, identified by police as 33-year-old Julio Santiago, ran away on foot. One of the officers eventually found Santiago hiding behind bushes, Miami-Dade Police said.
“At some point in time during that encounter, shots were fired. That subject is deceased here on the scene,” a Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman said.
The officer who shot and killed Santiago is a Miami Beach Police officer assigned to the Miami-Dade Police Department's Robbery Intervention Detail, and Miami-Dade Police are taking the lead in the investigation, police said.
Police said the vehicle was identified as a stolen SUV from the Palm Beach area.
Local
Records showed Santiago had previous arrests for arson, burglary and grand theft.
The task force includes officers from several police departments.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
