A suspect who was in the custody of the Broward Sheriff's Office died Monday morning after he was Tasered following a domestic dispute in Oakland Park, police said.
The BSO confirmed they are investigating the death of 31-year-old James Doe, which happened around 2 a.m. at the Lake Pointe Condos in the 200 block of Lake Pointe Drive.
Deputies were responding to a domestic violence call at the complex after Doe reportedly kicked in his girlfriend's door and got inside her apartment, BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.
The girlfriend was not injured but was in fear for her life, Moschella said. Police were able to detain Doe and put him in the back of a police car.
"Once he got into the patrol car, he was violent, he was very agitated, he began kicking at the doors and windows," Moschella said.
When Doe refused to stop kicking, one of the deputies Tased him.
"A deputy opened the door and deployed a Taser one time, which generally is a very safe, non-lethal weapon used in just that sort of circumstance," Moschella said. "A short time later, they realized that he was unresponsive, deputies immediately administered CPR and called for fire rescue."
Doe was transported to Florida Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
Moschella said the medical examiner's office will have to determine the cause of death.
