Somerset Academy Grieves After Student Collapses & Dies in P.E. Class

14-year-old was in P.E. class when he fell to the ground, Broward Sheriff's Office says

NBC 6 Reporter Melissa Adan is in Wilton Manors, where grief counselors will be on hand at Sommerset Academy after a student collapsed and died.

A 14-year-old student from Somerset Academy Village in Wilton Manors has died after passing out at the school Thursday, officials said.

The teen was outside doing an activity during P.E. class at the school at 225 Northwest 29th Street when he fell to the ground around 10:45 a.m., Broward Sheriff's Office officials said.

The school called fire rescue and notified to the parents of the student immediately after the student passed out suddenly, said Lynn Norman Teck, the director of communications for the Florida Charter School Alliance.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue rushed the teen to a local hospital where he died a short time later. His name wasn't released.

Teck said counselors were at the school Thursday afternoon and parents are being notified.

"It's devastating because it's at a school and my kids go here. It's devastating to me," parent Katrina Madison said.

BSO said they are investigating the student's death and that the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
