According to Miami-Dade Schools police, two male students agreed to meet at the bleachers on campus and got into a fistfight. During that fight, one of them pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the other in his left side.

"One of the students removed a sharp object, we don’t know exactly what it is, it hasn’t been recovered. Unfortunately, he stabbed the other student," Miami-Dade Schools Police Deputy Chief Carlos Fernandez said.

Officers could be seen closing off the sports field where the stabbing happened with yellow crime scene tape.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed they responded and airlifted a pediatric trauma alert patient to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

The student who was stabbed is in stable condition, officials later confirmed.

The school briefly went into lockdown, stirring alarm among students and parents, though district officials called it an "isolated altercation."

The attacker fled campus and authorities said they were negotiating with his mother to turn himself in.

Miami-Dade Schools Police confirmed Friday morning that the 16-year-old student responsible turned himself in. He's facing charges including attempted felony murder, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and exhibition of a weapon on school grounds.

According to an arrest report, the 16-year-old told detectives he'd been involved in a physical altercation with the student earlier in the week, so he started bringing a steak knife to school.

He said it was during lunchtime Thursday when he encountered the other student by the bleachers near the baseball field and that they got into a heated argument that ended with him stabbing the other student in the upper rib cage, the report said.

During the teen suspect's bond court appearance Friday, his mother said he was being bullied at school. The judge responded that it was no excuse for stabbing another student.

The teen was ordered to stay in juvenile detention for 21 days, and prosecutors said they were reviewing whether the case should be moved to adult court.
