Hospital officials said a South Florida man injured after jumping from a moving commuter train to retrieve his cell phone has died.

A spokesman for St. Mary's Medical Center told The Palm Beach Post that 26-year-old Eddie Diaz of Miami was taken off life support on Friday. His family is donating his organs.

West Palm Beach Police said the Tri-Rail train was leaving the station Monday night when Diaz realized he left his phone on a bench. Diaz then broke the glass of the emergency safety mechanism, pulled the emergency stop lever and exited through the front passenger door.

Witnesses said Diaz tried to leap from the train to the platform but slipped and fell. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
