A man accused of hiring a drug addict to kill his parents was found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder Wednesday by a Miami-Dade jury.
Christopher Sutton, 31, allegedly plotted against his parents because they sent him to a boarding school in Samoa.
During the trial, prosecutors painted Sutton as a vengeful menace who finally found a way to get back at his parents in 2004. John and Susan Sutton were sleep in their Coral Gables home when Garrett Kopp, broke in and shot them multiple times.
Susan Sutton died after being shot six times. John Sutton was shot in the face but survived the attack. He is now blind and testified against his son during the trial.
Christopher Sutton took the stand in his own defense and cried in front of jurors as he talked about his time in the Samoan school for troubled teens.
Defense attorneys argued their client was innocent and Kopp acted alone in attacking the Suttons. Kopp was also a witness in the trial. He was sentenced to 30 years, but escaped the death penalty in exchange for his testimony.
