Small Plane That Took Off From Opa-Locka Goes Down Near Bahamas

A small plane has reportedly gone down in water near the Bahamas. Four people were believed to be on board. This story is continuing to develop.

A plane that took off from a South Florida airport crashed just off the coast of New Providence in the Bahamas Friday, according to the United States Coast Guard.

At least two people were on board the Douglas DC3 cargo plane at the time of the crash, the Coast Guard said. The incident happened just before 4:45 p.m. Friday.

The plane, which took off from the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, was bound for the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The plane's two occupants - both pilots - were rescued by the Royal Bahamian Defense Force and determined to be in good health.

Early reports indicate the cause of the crash was due to a left engine failure, according to the Air Accident Investigation Department of The Bahamas.

Responders are currently trying to locate the aircraft, which appears to be submerged, authorities said.

No deaths were reported. An investigation is ongoing.
