Miami Police said officers had responded to the area with fire rescue crews for a potential overdose when the shooting happened.

First responders tried to render aid to the subject, who became uncooperative and armed himself with a weapon, police said. An officer then discharged their weapon and struck the subject.

"Unfortunately one of our officers was involved in a discharge," Miami Police Capt. Freddie Cruz told reporters. "The nature of the call is we were here as a backup with fire rescue."

The person was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, Cruz said. That person's identity wasn't released, but his mother told NBC6 off-camera that he is 17 years old. She said he made it out of surgery.

Cruz said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, which is standard practice in police-involved shootings.

No other information was released.
