One Dead, Six Other Cyclists Injured After Being Struck By Car in Davie

The incident happened near State Road 84 and Weston Road around 8:30 a.m., Davie Police said

NBC 6’s Arlene Borenstein reports on the death of one cyclist and injuries of six others after being struck by a car.

One cyclist was killed and six others were injured after being struck by a car in Davie Sunday morning.

The incident happened near State Road 84 and Weston Road around 8:30 a.m., Davie Police said.

According to officials, one of the cyclists died and another was hospitalized in critical condition. Five others were being treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, 33-year-old driver Nicole Vanderweit, told investigators she was distracted by something in the passenger compartment, police said. She also said the sun was shining directly in her face, contributing to the crash.

Davie Police Sgt. Mark Leone says there are no signs Vanderweit was impaired or speeding. She was cooperative with investigators, allowing them to download potential crash data from the car as well as contents of her cell phone. Vanderweit has not been charged, pending the investigation.

The woman who died was identified as Denise Marsh, part of the Cycling Family Broward. The other cyclist who was hospitalized was identified as 62-year-old Carlos Rodriguez.
