Police Arrest Suspect After Chase, Standoff in Miami

Police arrested a suspect following a brief chase and standoff.

Police in Miami arrested a suspect following a brief chase and standoff Tuesday morning.

The standoff ended in the area of Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 62nd Street around 9 a.m.

Initial reports indicate that the standoff may have been related to an earlier carjacking. The suspect was believed to have been armed.

Aerial footage showed multiple police cars with guns drawn toward a small white Hyundai vehicle. Moments later, the suspect was seen emerging. He was immediately placed under arrest.

"Basically I guess he was trying to decide if he wanted to be taken into custody or not," Miami Police spokeswoman Frederica Burden said. "When you've done as much as he's done today, he had to think about what he did so he was making a decision on whether he was gonna go easy or if we were gonna have to force him out."

Miami Fire Rescue crews were seen providing medical attention to the handcuffed suspect as he sat on the curb. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The victim of the carjacking, who didn't want to be identified, said she and her baby were held at knifepoint when the suspect demanded her vehicle in Little Havana.

The woman said she tried to fight the man off but let him get away for the safety of her child.

"First I started screaming and hit him with my coffee mug on the forehead but then he showed me a knife so I put my keys on the floor and bunches of guys come to help but he was with a knife so they can't do anything," she said.

Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Benjamin D. Klispie. He was charged with armed robbery/carjacking, police said. It's unknown if he's hired an attorney.
