The motorcyclist lost control and struck the van. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the van, a 29-year-old woman, stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Police believe narcotics and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
Police later identified the 17-year-old as Giancarlo Villasmil, who was a junior at JC Bermudez Doral Senior High School. Family and friends rushed to the scene upon learning of the crash.
