Police have identified the man who fell several stories to his death at a hotel in Hollywood early Sunday.
Piotr Kulesza, 46, from Chicago, died after he fell from the 23rd floor of the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, Hollywood Police said Monday.
Kulesza is a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and an associate professor at Northwestern's Department of Pathology. He was attending a conference in Hollywood when he fell to his death, a Northwestern spokeswoman said.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to Peter’s family; to all his colleagues in the Department of Pathology; and the staff of the NMH Cytopathology laboratory and the Pathology Core Facility, who had the pleasure of working with him. He will be sorely missed," Dr. William Muller, the chair of the Department of Pathology, said in a statement Monday.
Officials said Kulesza crashed through the glass atrium and into the hotel lobby around 12:38 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses said the impact sounded like a bomb had gone off, causing everyone to duck and run for cover.
Police said the initial investigation does not reveal any suspected foul play but detectives are investigating to determine whether it was an accident or intentional.
