Miami Beach Police on Wednesday released the name of the man gunned down on South Beach by police officers during an incident over Memorial Day weekend, and said a pistol was found inside his car.
Raymond Herisse, a 22-year-old from Boynton Beach, was killed after police opened fire on his car during an incident Monday morning in the area of Collins Avenue and 15th Street, authorities said.
Police Chief Carlos Noriega said Herisse had tried to hit officers with his car. Eventually, the car came to the stop.
Herisse's car was then surrounded by several officers who then fired dozens of rounds at the car, police said.
Police initially said that Herisse was unarmed and had used his vehicle as a weapon. But late Wednesday, police officials said a semiautomatic pistol had been found inside the vehicle.
Four bystanders were also hit by bullets and taken to local hospital, authorities said. Police said two Miami Beach officers and a Hialeah officer were also injured by gunfire. Three other Hialeah police officers were also involved in the shooting, police confirmed.
A second shooting an hour later also involved a police officer, but the suspect was taken into custody without injury, authorities said.
At a City Commission meeting Wednesday officials briefly discussed ways to curb the crime during Memorial Day weekend, in which hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to South Beach.
This year, more than 430 people were arrested over the four-day span, although most were misdemeanors.
One commissioner suggested a curfew for Urban Beach Weekend, but officials decided to discuss the issue in a subcommittee at a later time.
