Officials said the crash involved several semi-trucks and that the tanker was leaking fuel from one of its storage tanks, creating a "large-scale hazardous materials incident."

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue’s Hazardous Materials team responded to the scene to secure the leak and lay a foam blanket, officials said.

The driver of one of the vehicles was taken to a nearby hospital but was in good condition, officials said.

Officials said it will last several hours until the fuel leak can be secured and the truck can be turned upright. Only southbound traffic on U.S. 27 was being allowed to pass intermittently.

Drivers were urged to seek an alternate route, as this is a "long and protracted incident," officials said.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
