Ophelia Set to Tie Over 100-Year-Old Record For Consecutive Hurricanes Formed

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday are near 50 mph and the storm is centered about 790 miles west-southwest of the Azores

NBC 6’s Angie Lassman has more on the storm that could become the 10th consecutive hurricane of the season.

With over a month and a half left in the 2017 hurricane season, a record that has stood for over 100 years may soon be equalled, and could fall.

Tropical Storm Ophelia is expected to strengthen to a hurricane as it spins far out over the Atlantic. The National Hurricane Center says Ophelia is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday.

While the storm is no threat to land, attention is drawn to the fact it would be the 10th consecutive storm to become a hurricane this season — tying a streak that dates back to 1893.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Tuesday are near 50 mph and the storm is centered about 790 miles west-southwest of the Azores and is moving southeast near 3 mph.

So far in 2017, there have been 15 named storms, with five of them major hurricanes and three reaching Category 5 status.
