No Bond for Man Charged in Brutal Home Invasion Rape in Coral Springs

19-year-old charged in sexual attack on woman in home

The teen accused of raping a woman inside her Pompano Beach home with her newborn child nearby made his first court appearance Tuesday, where a judge ordered him held without bond.

Gary Lenard Holmes remains behind bars on three counts of armed sexual battery, one count of burglary with a battery, one count of armed occupied burglary and one count of petit theft in the Sunday night incident.

Police say Holmes, armed with a knife, broke into the home in the 2300 block of Northwest 95th Avenue through an open door with the intent to burglarize when he encountered the 25-year-old woman.

Holmes choked the woman, punched her repeatedly and raped her as her newborn child lay on a bed in a nearby bedroom, police said.

Police say the woman was able to dial 911 on her cell phone, but couldn't talk and all the dispatcher could hear was the sounds of the struggle. The dispatcher was able to triangulate the call to within a close proximity.

When the attacker fled, the woman was able to call 911 from a land line, and Holmes was arrested a short time later. police say he confessed to raping the woman.

The woman was treated for non-life threatening injuries, and the baby was unharmed.
