Newly Released Records Show Accused Teen Killer's Troubled Past

Kit Darrant is facing premeditated first-degree murder and life in prison for the murder of his mother

A 16-year-old boy who confessed to killing his mother in their North Miami Beach apartment in March skipped school, drank and smoked, and took his mother’s car without permission, according to newly released records and statements.

Kit Darrant is facing a premeditated first-degree murder charge and life in prison, The Miami Herald reported. His aunt, who recounted several events, revealed a troubled past between his 35-year-old mother, Renette Emile, and Darrant.

During an argument, Darrant jumped out of his mother’s moving vehicle and then dared cars to hit him, his aunt, Rena Emile, told police.

“He didn’t really want to live,” she said in a statement. “He said he got nothing to live for.”

But Emile told police she believed his mother, who was a security guard and student, was doing what she could. She said she remembered Darrant make a threat after he completed a counseling program for troubled teens.

“I’m going to kill myself or I’m going to kill her this time,” Rena Emile quoted Darrant as saying. “He thought she didn’t love him, that she would do anything to get rid of him.”

She also said she witnessed his mother beat him since he was a toddler, according to the Herald.

“He would tell me my sister beat on him bad. Really bad. Like how they beat kids in Haiti. Like how my mom used to beat us,” she was quoted as saying. “I would tell her that’s not right.”

Authorities said Darrant’s 35-year-old mother called police days before her death to report that her son had taken her car. They believe the two got into an argument sometime after when he came home late.

“Then the thought came into my head after the argument that my mother should not be alive anymore,” Darrant told police in a statement.

Emile was strangled and stabbed to death. Darrant covered her body with sheets and attempted to hide the smell with Gain detergent powder, police said.

After her death, Darrant threw a party, which was attended by about 50 kids from his school, Dr. Michael Krop Senior High, the newspaper reported.

“He was like, ‘I’m going to bring so many girls,’ and stuff — like I don’t know why he would do something at a place where his dead mom is,” his friend Michael was quoted as saying.

He continued to use his mother’s Mercedes and take care of his 3-year-old half-brother. His mother's decomposing body was discovered by her sister and boyfriend about eight days later.

Darrant entered a plea of not guilty. His defense attorney declined to comment.

It is unclear where his half-brother was during the time of the murder.
