9 people, including 4 kids, hospitalized after high carbon monoxide levels found in Margate home

Nine residents are recovering after fire crews detected higher than normal levels of carbon monoxide inside a Margate home. NBC6’s Olivia Jaquith reports.

Nine residents were hospitalized early Thursday morning after fire crews detected higher than normal levels of carbon monoxide inside a home in Margate, officials said.

Margate Police officials said officers and fire rescue crews responded to the home in the 4900 block of Southwest 5th Court around 2:30 a.m. after receiving a call about a person who was unresponsive.

When crews arrived, they found a gas generator inside the home. The home was quickly ventilated and all residents were evacuated, officials said.

Video from the scene showed a heavy police presence as officers placed caution tape around the home.

Nine people including some children were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning suffered at a Margate home.

According to police, a total of nine people, including five adults and four children, were were transported to various local hospitals with possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

All were in stable condition.

First responders said it's a reminder to keep generators away from your house and never bring them inside.

“I cannot stress enough not to use a portable generator inside the home. They all were suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning," Margate Fire Marshall David Scholl said.

It's unclear how long the generator was running but an investigation was underway, officials said.
