A wrong-way collision killed a Miccosukee Police Department officer and another driver on Interstate 75 near U.S. Route 27, Florida Highway Patrol said.
The collision occurred in Broward County on Saturday at about 5 a.m. on I-75 about a quarter of a mile west of U.S. 27 – a stretch of road known as Alligator Alley.
FHP identified the officer as 40-year-old Steven G. Greco and the other driver as 32-year-old Hollywood resident Curtis E. Woolwine, who died at the scene.
Greco was on his way home from work. He was transported by helicopter to Broward Health Medical Center but died from his injuries, FHP said.
"They did everything they could on scene and he was transported to the hospital," FHP Lt. Alvaro Feola said. "Unfortunately, he died. The other person was pronounced dead at the scene."
Greco's wife, who is pregnant, was overcome with grief when her husband died and had to be hospitalized, Greco's brother told NBC 6.
"The tribe is providing support and assistance to the fallen officer's family," the tribal police department said in a statement.
FHP said Woolwine was traveling west in a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic on an eastbound lane on I-75 when the head-on collision occurred with Greco's 2018 Dodge Charger.
Greco joined the force in March 2018.
FHP said it the crash remains under investigation.
"It is one of our brothers and we still have to maintain and be professional not only to the officer but to the other driver," Lt. Feola said.
