Miami Police Officer Forced to Shoot, Kill Stray Dog, Police Say

A stray dog was shot and killed by a Miami police officer Thursday afternoon after it charged at the cop, the department said.

The incident happened around 4:25 p.m. in the area of Northeast 80th Street and 3rd Avenue.

The officer was responding to a complaint about someone using drugs in the area when the large dog came rushing towards him, officials said. The officer fired his gun in order to protect himself.

The canine was taken to Knowles Animal Hospital where it later died. Officials did not reveal the dog's breed.

The department is investigating the shooting.
