The two men were going up an elevator and got into an argument, according to Miami Gardens Police. As the elevator opened up to the fifth floor, one of the men started shooting and the other exchanged fire.

Both of the men were airlifted to Aventura Hospital in critical condition, where they later died, police said.

The motive was unknown. Police said there were multiple witnesses and the scene is still under investigation.

One woman who spoke with NBC6 works for a hairstylist on the 6th floor and heard the gunshots below.

"I just heard boom, boom, boom, boom,” she said. "I smelled gunpowder, but they said it's not that, so we were chilling, but we looked through the window, heard ambulances, my homegirl heard somebody in the elevator screaming for help."

Other people showed up to work later in the day, only to find out they couldn't get inside.

Niels Junco has a studio on the 6th floor. He said he's grateful he wasn't around during the shooting but is now ready for a change of scenery.

"Very unsafe, very unsafe, I do plan on leaving very soon,” Junco said. “I'm very disappointed. I was expecting something like this because something already happened similar to this a couple months back."

Then there were some who showed up searching for a friend.

Avery Twiggs said his coworker lives in the building. Once he learned about the shooting he came over as fast as he could, but when he showed up, he says he couldn’t get in touch with his friend, or get answers from police.

"He's not answering the phone, I can't get him,” Twiggs said. "Right now it's kind of disheartening because I get no real, I know they're still investigating but I want to know what's going on."
