Miami-Dade Court Clerk Arrested for Official Misconduct

A Miami-Dade courtroom clerk was arrested after police say he took a cash payment in exchange for wiping out court costs.

Donald R. Mathis, 48, was arrested Thursday on charges of official misconduct, conspiracy to commit unlawful compensation and falsifying public records, Miami-Dade Police said.

According to police, a two-month investigation revealed that Mathis solicited and accepted a $1,400 payment to expunge outstanding court costs owed to the Miami-Dade County Clerk of the Courts.

Mathis also provided official documents that stated the fees were sufficiently paid, police said.

Mathis was booked into jail, where he was being held on $5,500 bond Friday, records showed. Attorney information wasn't available.
