Miami-Dade Commish's Kid Busted in Drunken Bar Brawl

Gimenez's son arrested after fight over football

Between corruption probes and criminal charges, South Florida politicians have enough to worry about without their kids going out and causing a ruckus.

But that's just what happened Saturday night when the troubled son of Miami-Dade commissioner found himself behind bars yet again after a drunken bar brawl got out of hand, police said.

Julio Gimenez, son of Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, was busted on disorderly intoxication and aggravated battery outside the Sports Exchange in Coral Gables, according to a police report.

According to the report, Gimenez, 31, got into an argument with another patron over a football game and the two decided to take it outside. When they got outside, Gimenez headbutted and threw a beer at the unidentified person, then grabbed him by the neck.

When a third person tried to get Gimenez off the person, he got thumped too.

Gimenez was hit on the head with a bottle at some point during the scuffle. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment then booked into the county jail.

A manager for Sports Exchange confirmed there had been a fight outside the bar and that a man had been arrested but knew no other details about how the fight started.

It's not the first time the commissioner's son has found himself in hot water. He was busted in 2006 and charged with drug possession, resisting arrest and battery, but the charges were later dropped.

Carlos Gimenez has been a District 7 Commissioner since 2004, and was Miami's City Manager from 2000-2003.
