Marco Antonio Rubio is born on May 28 in Miami to parents Mario Rubio and Oria Garcia, Cuban immigrants who came to the United States in 1956.
1989
Rubio graduates from South Miami Senior High School
1993
Earns Bachelor of Science degree in political science from University of Florida.
Local
1996
Earns law degree from University of Miami School of Law.
1998
Elected to West Miami City Commission, where he served until 2000. Marries Jeanette Dousdebes, a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader.
2000
Elected to the Florida House of Representatives for the 111th House District.
2002
Wins re-election to second term. He's later appointed House Majority Leader, and serves in that role until 2006.
2006
Becomes Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives.
2009
In May, Rubio announces run for U.S. Senate in 2010, to fill seat being vacated by Mel Martinez, who resigned.
2010
On Nov. 2, he wins election, beating out former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who was running as an independent, and Democrat Kendrick Meek.
2012
Rubio's book An American Son: A Memoir, is published. In August, Rubio gives a rousing speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.
2013
