One dog is dead and another was injured after a man walking his rottweiller opened fire on the dogs after they charged at him, police said.
George Doughty was walking his dog, Justice, in the area of Indiana Ave. and Pennsylvania Ave. early Monday when the two dogs, which weren't on a leash, charged at him.
Police said the two dogs, a pitbull named Red and a rottweiller named Cleopatra, belonged to Randy Daise, who lives nearby on the 1000 block of Indiana Ave.
When Red and Cleopatra approached, Doughty, who has a concealed weapons permit, opened fire.
"They slip out ocassionally," said Daise about his dogs, "and then I get right on top of it, but then I hear them shots, I'm running, I'm saying, Jack [sic] done shot our dogs."
Red was killed. Cleopatra, who is pregnant with puppies, was hit and taken to Hollywood Animal Hospital, where she is in stable condition.
Police said Daise's dogs had attacked Doughty's dog about a month ago. Daise claimed that Doughty warned him after the initial attack that if he saw Daise's dogs walking around, he'd kill them.
Doughty didn't want to comment.
Fort Lauderdale Police said Doughty voluntarily came to the station to discuss the incident, and that no charges have been filed at this time.
