Man Accused of Attacking Fellow Officer at Everglades Correctional Institution

NBC 6’s Marissa Bagg reports.

An officer at the Everglades Correctional Institution in southwest Miami-Dade is facing a battery charge after authorities said he attacked a fellow corrections officer.

Wilson Robau-Rodriguez, 27, was arrested at the facility on Wednesday night, according to a Miami-Dade Police arrest report.

The report said Robau-Rodriguez and a female corrections officer got into a verbal confrontation in a dorm in the facility. The confrontation ended but Robau-Rodriguez approached her from behind and began another verbal confrontation, the report said.

During the incident, Robau-Rodriguez shined a flashlight in the other officer's face as he was just inches away, the report said. When she tried to move him to "create space" he punched her in the face, the report said.

Robau-Rodriguez then held the other officer on the ground and kicked her multiple times, the report said. She was left with a swollen eye, bloody nose and multiple bruises on her forearms, the report said.

The other officer was able to get to her feet and call for help, and other officers separated the two, according to the report.

"The actions of this officer were not only unlawful but totally unacceptable, and the Department has zero tolerance for this behavior," the Florida Department of Corrections said in a statement Friday. "Following the incident, staff immediately notified law enforcement and he has been arrested by the Miami-Dade PD. The Department is taking action to terminate his employment."
