The catchy new pop/reggaeton remix by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee titled “Despacito” featuring pop singing sensation Justin Bieber continues to sore in the music charts since its release in late April.
The track recently broke the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it continues on the No.1 spot on the Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart for the 15th week in a row, making this the first No. 1 for Fonsi since 2009.
On YouTube the video managed to generate over 20 million views during the first 24 hours of its premiere, and it is currently slated as the most played song on Spotify.
Pop singer Luis Fonsi spoke to NBC6.com’s Latin Beat at the Billboard Latin Music Awards where he explained just how Justin Bieber became interested in singing in Spanish.
“I would love to say it was my idea but he’s (Justin Bieber) the one who called us,” said Fonsi. “He heard the song, he liked it, he said ‘I want to do the remix, I want to sing in Spanish’ he did it all. “
Fonsi explains that while Justin Bieber was on tour in Colombia he went to a nightclub in the capital city of Bogota and was in awe when he saw the crowd’s reaction when the DJ played “Despacito.”
“He saw the crowd’s reaction and immediately said ‘I want to be on this track’ so he called his manager and his manager called me,” said Fonsi. “He wrote the verse and sang the chorus.”
Fonsi adds that he was very surprised when he learned that an artist of such high caliber would be interested in singing one of his songs in Spanish.
He also says he applauds Bieber for taking a chance to sing in Spanish.

“I think it’s important not for me or the song, but for Latin music because it’s important that artists of his magnitude can recognize the importance of the Latino audience.”
