The gun wasn't with anyone and investigators are trying to determine who had it, where it came from, and how long it was there, Moss said.

"A gun on campus is concerning in and of itself, but where it's found is even more concerning," Moss said.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed multiple police officers outside the school's entrance Tuesday afternoon.

Moss said officers were searching the school with a K-9 as a precaution to make sure there were no other weapons on campus.

"I am highly concerned because we did find a weapon on campus, but our secondary systems allowed us to find that with a person seeing something and saying something," Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "We're definitely looking to get to the bottom of this, of how this weapon came to our campus and was left in the area on our campus."

A student was arrested on Monday for bringing a gun to Miramar High, but police said it wasn't loaded and the student didn't have ammunition. The student was charged with possession of a weapon on school property.

The gun was found Monday thanks to the school's metal detector, officials said.

"Look, I think the fact that there's been two in two days, it does raise a brow. We don't know that there's a connection to any of that, but of course when you have something like this it's a warning to do the job and take those extra steps, so we're going to be working extra hard to try to figure this out," Moss said. "So far we've got no threats to the school, we've got no information that leads to us having a concern other than these things and so we're going to be looking at this to try to figure that out."

In a statement, Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam said an additional officer will be assigned to Miramar High, bringing the total to three full-time officers.

An additional officer is also being assigned to Everglades High School as a proactive measure, Messam said.

"We take this matter with the utmost seriousness and remain committed to keeping our schools safe. I urge families to continue speaking with their children about the importance of reporting suspicious activity," Messam said.

Moss and Hepburn stressed that the school and others in Broward remain safe.

"Hopefully it's a coincidence and hopefully we can do everything we can to make sure we don't have more coincidences like this in the future," Moss said.
