A list of witnesses and evidence prosecutors intend to use in their case against George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin was released Tuesday. Sybrina Fulton thanked the county and friend Sherra McLeod talked about donating vacation hours for the mother.
A list of witnesses and evidence prosecutors intend to use in their case against George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin was released Tuesday.
The 8-page discovery document includes Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, his brother, Jahvarius Fulton, Zimmerman's father, Robert Zimmerman Sr., his friend, Joe Oliver and neighbor Frank Taffe, as well as 22 witnesses whose names were redacted.
Also included are several officers with the Sanford Police Department, members of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and State Attorney's Offices in Sanford and Jacksonville, Sanford Fire Rescue workers, members of the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office and the FBI.
Bill Lee, the police chief that night, is not on the list.
The evidence in the document, filed Monday in Seminole County, includes several Sanford Police reports, witness statements, 911 calls and items obtained from Zimmerman.
The Zimmerman items include a firearm, projectiles, clothing, shoes, a DAN sample, medical records and cell phone data, according to the document.
In a posting on the website set up by Zimmerman attorney Mark O'Mara, O'Mara said he received 67 compact discs and numerous hardcopy documents Monday which also includes photos and video.
O'Mara said he and his staff will begin examining the information and won't comment on particular pieces of evidence.
Martin, 17, was shot by Zimmerman in a gated community in Sanford on Feb. 26. He has been charged with second-degree murder but has pleaded not guilty, saying the shooting was in self-defense.
Authorities didn't charge Zimmerman in the shooting of the Miami Gardens teen for over six weeks, sparking national protests led by Martin's parents and civil rights groups.
Zimmerman remains free on bond at an undisclosed location.
Also on Tuesday, Sybrina Fulton spoke before the Miami-Dade County Commission to thank her fellow county employees for donating 8 months of vacation time to her. Fulton received over $40,000 worth of vacation time.
"I just want to say thank you for all of you who voted to support me in this fight," Fulton said. "I appreciate the people who donated time and to those who couldn't donate time, I just say thank you. I will continue to make you proud of me as a county employee."
Fulton, who has worked for the county for more than 20 years and places residents in county housing units, has been away from her job since the shooting.
"I purposely wore my badge today because I want people to know that I work for the county," she said. "Don't count me out so fast."
Co-worker Sherra McLeod said she was pleased to give her friend a gift.
“It was very emotional for us,” McLeod said. “There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about Sabrina and her family, and there were many of us who wanted to do something for her and so the donation of time was the perfect way to do that.”
