A fire at a duplex in Lauderhill left one resident injured and more than a dozen people displaced.

A fire at a duplex in Lauderhill left one resident injured and more than a dozen people displaced Tuesday morning, officials said.

The fire broke out at the home in the 5400 block of Northwest 17th Street.

Residents said a young child who was the first to recognize something was burning alerted the adults who were home with her.

"My daughter, she was in the room. They say she ran out and said there is a fire behind the TV and then they ran out the room, but we lost everything," resident Rodney Smith said.

Smith said those inside rushed out into the street carrying what they could, including a rabbit and the other pets that were on the property.

Lauderhill Fire Rescue crews responded and were able to extinguish the blaze but officials said a resident who tried to break glass to put out the fire was injured.

Six people were home at the time, but no other injuries were reported.

A total of 14 people have been displaced by the fire, and Red Cross officials said they're coordinating disaster aid to those affected.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
