Lakeland Swans to Cut Carbs From Diets

Hidden underneath their fluffy down feathers, Lakeland's swans are packing on the pounds.

The city's swan veterinarian says an abundance of white bread is harming some of the city's feathered mascots.

The carbohydrates also are causing a decrease in calcium. That is a problem that could affect the number of swans on Lake Morton.

The Ledger reports the city took action and installed two bird feed dispensers around the lake. For 25 cents, visitors can get a handful of healthy, well-balanced feed.

Officials say the feed is suitable for all water fowl at Lake Morton, but if visitors still want to bring food from home, lettuce is the best option.
