Keys Officers Will Soon Wear Body-Mounted Cameras

Law enforcement officers in the Florida Keys will soon be wearing body-mounted cameras.

Both the Key West Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office have been testing the cameras for several months.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay tells The Key West Citizen that if he'll pick up the tab for the Key West police if the city can't come up with the funding for about 100 cameras. Each costs about $600.

Ramsay says he's made the same offer to the Key Colony Beach police. He says the cameras are "important for law enforcement, public safety, protection of evidence, false claims against officers and to get the true story out there."

The president of the Florida Police Benevolent Association has said body cameras could distract and endanger officers.
