Police Identify Aventura Hit-and-Run Victim as Decorated War Veteran

Police say an elderly man died early Saturday morning after a driver struck him in a crosswalk, then fled the scene. NBC 6’s Angela Pellerano reports.

The elderly victim of Saturday's early morning hit-and-run crash in Aventura has been identified.

Two joggers discovered the body of 70-year-old Richard James Flaherty in the median between NE 199th Street and 29th Place around 7 a.m.

Aventura Police said Flaherty was hit sometime before 3:30 a.m. while crossing NE 199th Street in the crosswalk.

Police later located the vehicle involved in the crash, and said the suspected driver is cooperating with investigators.

Flaherty was a decorated combat veteran, who received the Silver Star and several Bronze Stars for valor during combat in the Vietnam War.
