Aerial footage showed four people involved in a high-speed chase between authorities and a silver Mercedes SUV that ended in northwest Miami-Dade Friday afternoon.
The chase began at SW 92nd Avenue and SW 88th Street in Kendall, and aerial footage showed the car went north on the Don Shula Expressway and then onto the Palmetto Expressway. Aerial footage showed the silver Mercedes veering through traffic on a highway. The car hit several cars including police vehicles.
Near NW 27th Avenue, the driver crashed into the rear of the box truck and maneuvered away towards the on ramp and drove against traffic. A police officer trapped them in with a patrol vehicle, and the driver fled the car, jumping a fence.
Aerial footage showed several officers shooting at the vehicle and the fleeing suspect. Three other suspects were pulled from the Mercedes, put on the ground and taken into custody.
Two suspects were shot and one complained of shortness of breath, police said. Two men were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital, one in critical condition and one in stable condition.
Jason Salem witnessed the chase come to a crashing end outside his the door of his business.
“Somebody was trying to run away, and then they shot him,” said Salem, who owns Huslerz Wheelz. “It’s crazy Miami, and things, it’s getting out of hand.”
No officers were injured in the episode, which began around lunchtime with reports of a strange person seen around a Kendall home, said police, who responded there.
"He fled from the area, he utilized his vehicle to strike the detective's vehicle, and at that point is where the pursuit ensued," Miami-Dade Police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta said.
Police said they found guns inside the vehicle, but they did not yet know if the vehicle was stolen.
