Two Teens Killed, Including High School Student, in Liberty City Shooting

NBC 6’s Darryl Forges has more as police look for the person who killed two teens and injured two more during a Sunday shooting.

What to Know

  • Four people were shot Sunday afternoon in Miami.
  • Two people are dead, two others are recovering in the hospital.
  • The incident happened at the 1300 block of Northwest 63rd Terrace.

Two teens including an honors student at Northwestern High School were killed in a shooting in Liberty City Sunday that left two other people injured.

The shooting happened sometime around 2 p.m. as the victims were in the alleyway off of Northwest 13th Avenue and 63rd Street, Miami Police said.

Police say several people approached the victims and opened fire. More than 25 shots were heard in the area, police said.

“It is believed that there are multiple shooters but we cannot confirm an exact number," said Officer Kiara Delva of Miami Police.

Three men were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, however, one passed away at the hospital. He was later identified as 17-year-old Kimson Green.

Another teen, who was identified by family members as Ricky Dixon, 18, died on the scene.

“Ricky was a sweetheart,” said Shirelda Huntley Thomas, Dixon’s aunt. “Very outgoing, a family kid. We never had any problems out of Ricky.”

Green was identified by officials as a 10th grade student at Miami Northwestern High School. Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the victim was a member of the school's National Honor Society, while a senior at the school is among those recovering in the hospital.

“It’s unexplainable. Kids murdered senselessly,” said Dwight Wells, who knows the victims.

Just last week, a four-year-old girl was killed blocks away.

The latest string of violence brought local leaders to the area to talk to members of the community, as well as law enforcement.

“I am tired, I am sickened by the fact that I’ve used all the words I could use to grieving parents," Carvalho said.

“This has to stop,” said Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. “I’ve spoken today with our governor, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, I’ve spoken to our police chief and city manager and they’ve assured me that we are going to increase our presence here. We need the county’s help because this is a county development and it needs to be cleaned up.”

On Monday, counselors will be available to students who need them at Northwestern High School. Superintendent Carvalho will be at the school, as well.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
