Fort Lauderdale Picks Air Show Promoter

City commission chooses promoter for 2012 aerial event

Next year's Fort Lauderdale Air and Sea Show is ready for takeoff after the city commission chose the show's promoter Tuesday night.

In a unanimous vote, the commission chose Brian Lilley, whose Lauderdale Air Show LLC will put on the event.

Lilley had been locked into a dogfight with competing promoter Stan Smith's group, who had helped organize the air show for 13 years before it was scrapped in 2007 over financial concerns.

In June, Lilley thought he had an agreement with the city to host the event until Smith stepped forward claiming the city was legally bound to let him host the 2012 event.

Lilly helps organize the Cocoa Beach air show and several others in the nation and proposed a scaled back version for the beach. He said he has already lined up sponsors and has reached out to several popular flying groups like the Thunderbirds to attend next year's event, scheduled for April 28th and 29th.
