A Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot and wounded a suspect who started shooting at him in northeast Miami-Dade Wednesday, officials said.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. in the area of Northeast 186th Street and W. Dixie Highway.
FHP officials said the trooper was working a traffic control duty in the area when a motorist stopped abruptly and got out of a car holding a firearm.
The suspect approached the trooper's patrol car and started shooting at the car, and the trooper returned fired, hitting the suspect, officials said.
FHP officials said the trooper wasn't injured. Footage showed the trooper's car with damage to the driver's side windshield, likely from the gunfire.
The trooper rendered aid to the suspect until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital where their condition was unknown.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
