LIVE RADAR: Flood watch issued for portions of South Florida as more rain expected

The flood watch, in effect until Wednesday night, signals that heavy rainfall may cause flooding in the watch area

NBC Universal, Inc.

Flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for portions of Miami-Dade and Broward Tuesday as a flood watch remained in effect for South Florida with expected total rainfall in the double digits in some areas by the end of the week.

One flash flood warning was issued for portions of southern Broward County, the National Weather Service said.

A second warning was also issued for parts of Miami-Dade.

Between 2 and 4 inches of rain have fallen and additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 4 inches were possible in the warned area, the NWS said.

Both warnings had expired by 8 p.m.

The severe thunderstorm warning was also issued until it expired at 3:45 p.m. and included parts of northern Miami-Dade and southern Broward.

All of the rain forecasted over the next few days will put a dent on the ongoing drought over parts of the region.

The flood watch is in effect until Wednesday night, but given a very wet forecast over the next several days, it’s possible it could be extended.

Broward and Miami-Dade are just two of seven counties in the watch but make up the largest population center at risk.

A plume of very rich, tropical air moved across the region early Tuesday morning and will support rounds of heavy rain for the next several days.

The two-day period of Tuesday and Wednesday could yield 3 to 6 inches of rain across the NBC6 viewing area, with locally heavier amounts possible.

Some thunderstorms will accompany the on and off downpours this week, but widespread severe weather is not anticipated.

A disturbance over the gulf of Mexico has a 20% chance of development in the next 7 days. The low will move across Florida and reemerge into the Atlantic in the coming days.

Development at this time is unlikely. Regardless, the low will continue to feed off the ample moisture in the gulf leading to days of excessive rainfall across the area.

Flooding threats last through the week and into the weekend. Rainfall totals through the end of the week could near 7 to 10 inches or more. Scattered storms will also last into the weekend.
