Family of Police-Involved Shooting Victim Asking for Thorough Investigation

Miami-Dade Police identified the man who was killed after a police chase ended with a fight and police opening fire. Police said Cedric Stanley, 35, was killed while he scuffled with an officer.

A little more than 24 hours later, Stanley’s family is mourning the loss of their son and expressing grief for the family of the hit and run victim, but also asking questions about why everything had to end with Stanley losing his life.

“I know there’s one side of the story and another side, but I’m going to talk up for him,” said Cedric’s uncle, Antoine Stanley. “This is a first inside loss in the immediate family.”

Miami-Dade Police said they opened fire when officers saw Cedric trying to take the gun of the officer he was fighting with. Neighbors said the shooting happened as K-9 and SWAT teams were in the area.

Miami Springs resident Jerry Escobito said, “As the officer rounded the house, we heard one shot and then we heard five shots in rapid succession.”

“Why didn’t they tase him?” Antoine Stanley asked. “Even though he did wrong. If he did wrong.”

Miami-Dade Police said the victim of the hit and run may have life altering injuries and may lose his leg because of the accident.

“We are concerned about that person’s family,” Antoine said. “And how he doing. May God be with him. And like I said, I’m sorry about what happened.”

Cedric Stanley had been arrested in the past for resisting an officer with violence. The family said he was a veteran of the Army and leaves behind two children in New York. They are asking for a thorough investigation of the entire incident.

The Florida Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation.
