Father of Teen Shot in Sanford Working “To Bring Justice For My Son”

"It's like my heart's been snatched out," Tracy Martin said

Trayvon Martin's father, Tracy Martin, told NBC 6 he hired an attorney and is speaking to the media as his last hope in finding justice for his son.

With tears in his eyes, Martin talked about the February night his 17-year-old son was shot and killed by a self-proclaimed neighborhood watchman.

"It's hard to continue to talk over and over and relive the story, but to bring justice for my son, if I have to do interviews everyday and relive the story, I'll do it because he's keeping me going right now," Martin said.

Martin's shooter, 28-year-old George Zimmerman, has not been arrested. He said he shot the Krop High School Student in self-defense – a claim the Martin family and attorney don't buy.

"It's like my heart's been snatched out," Martin said. "This guy went home that night and was able to sleep in his bed and that says a lot about the Sanford Police Department."

When the 911 calls were released, the Martin family only had more questions.

"He's making this claim of self-defense even though clearly on the 911 tapes, he (Zimmerman) is running after Trayvon," said Benjamin Crump, the family's attorney.

Zimmerman called Sanford Police after seeing Martin walking in his neighborhood. Martin was only 70 feet from where he was staying with his father when he was shot.

"We believe Trayvon went to his death not knowing who this strange man was chasing him and confronting him," Crump said.

The teen died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Martin was not armed. He was found with only a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea.

Now, the Martin family is searching for closure – something they said can only come with Zimmerman's arrest.

Until then, his father continues to mourn his son he called a soulmate.

"Just being able to close my eyes and see his smile – that keeps me going," Tracy Martin said.
